The Triceratops is a herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur genus that lived in the late Cretaceous period, around 68 million years ago in what is now North America (Montana, South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming and Canada)

It is one of the last known genera of dinosaurs and became extinct in the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event 66 million years ago. Its name, Triceratops, literally means "face with three horns."

It has been documented by numerous remains collected since the genus was first described in 1889, including at least one complete individual skeleton.

Paleontologist John Scannella commented: 'It's hard to walk through the Hell Creek Formation and not trip over a Triceratops«. 47 complete or partial skulls were discovered only in that area from 2000 to 2010, finding samples that represent different stages of their life: from hatchling to adult.

Like the archetypal ceratopsid, the Triceratops is one of the most popular dinosaurs and it has appeared in movies, postage stamps, and many other types of media.

Description of Triceratops

With a large bony frill and three horns on its large four-legged body; And with similarities to the modern rhinoceros, the Triceratops is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs and the best known ceratopsid.

Shared the scenery and probably was prey to the Tyrannosaurus, even though these two dinosaurs are unlikely to fight in the way that is often shown in museum exhibits and popular images.

The function of the steering wheel and its three distinctive facial horns on its head have long inspired debate as these have traditionally been viewed as defensive weapons against predators.

However, the most recent theories supported by analyzes that indicate the presence of blood vessels in the skull bones of ceratopsids find that it is more likely that these characteristics will be used mainly for identification, courtship and domination, like the antlers and horns of modern reindeer, mountain goats or rhinos.

Its enormous head had a long, narrow beak similar to that of a parrot, with horns on the forehead 0.9 meters long, while its frill could reach a width of 2.5 meters in size.

It is estimated that the Triceratops could reach 8-9 meters in length, 2.9 to 3.0 meters tall and weigh between 6,100 and 12,000 kilos.
