Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf F

The Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf F was the final version of the Panzer IV medium support tank to be produced with the short 7.5cm gun. Originally 625 short gunned Ausf Fs were ordered from Krupp-Gruson (500), Vomag (100) and Nibelungenwerke (25), but most of the 462 eventually built came from the Krupp order, while the Vomag and Nibelungenwerke machines were built as the Ausf F2.

The Ausf F saw an increase in the standard armour of the Panzer IV, to 50mm on the front and 30mm on the side, and the removal of the extra armour plates added to earlier models. This added another ton to the weight, and so in order to reduce the tank’s ground pressure the tracks were widened from 38cm to 40cm.

Minor changes included the addition of air intake cowls on the glacis hatches to help cool the brakes and a new muffler for the engines, while all of the ports and hatches had to be redesigned to cope with the thicker armour.

Most of the Ausf Fs were issued to existing frontline units to make up for combat losses, but they were also used to equip some new units and to re-equip the 2nd and 5th Panzer Divisions. Despite the increased pace of production that came with the Ausf F the number of Panzer IVs with the short gun on the Eastern Front halved in the first year of fighting – in June 1941 there had been 438 in service, but in June 1942 only 208 remained, and by July 1943, at the start of the battle of Kursk, only 60 survived.

Panzerkampfwagen IV Book Review

While most folks will think of the Panther and Tiger tanks as the key armored weapons of the Second World War, it was the Panzerkampfwagen IV that truly served in that role. Developed alongside the Panzer III, the Panzer IV was originally intended to be an infantry support weapon to deal with fortifications and anti-tank gun emplacements while the Panzer III was intended to combat other armored vehicles. When the Soviet T-34 entered the battlefield, it was soon realized that the Panzer III was out-gunned and did not have the growth potential while the Panzer IV had the larger chassis and turret ring which facilitated up-gunning that platform to counter the T-34. The Panzer IV was significant as it was the only German tank to remain in production throughout the war and was produced in the greatest numbers. In addition, the chassis of the Panzer IV would also serve as the foundation for a variety of other combat vehicles including the StuG IV, Jagdpanzer IV, Brumbaer, and Wirbelwind.

This new title from author David Doyle builds the progression of development in the Panzer IV series, focusing on the medium tank variants. The title starts out with the concept prototypes developed by Krupp and Rheinmetall that would launch this series of medium tanks. The subsequent chapters look at each production variant with the following progression:

  • Panzer IV Ausf.A
  • Panzer IV Ausf.B
  • Panzer IV Ausf.C
  • Panzer IV Ausf.D
  • Panzer IV Ausf.E
  • Panzer IV Ausf.F
  • Panzer IV Ausf.F2/G
  • Panzer IV Ausf.H
  • Panzer IV Ausf.J

Each chapter has a data table outlining the key statistics of each variant along with a summary of each variant. From there, the author follows his effective 'one picture is worth a thousand words' approach, providing significant period black and white photography which highlights the details and differences in each vehicle. In addition, these most of these photos are taken out in the field so you see each variant along with its crews in many of the theaters of operations. To supplement this title, there are several museum examples that are photographed in color which add additional useful information and visual perspectives of each subject.

Whether you're a historian or armor modeler (or both), this title provides a concise history as well as excellent detail reference for each production version of this tank. You will enjoy pouring over the photos as I don't believe many have been widely published and come from a variety of archival resources.

A Panzer I F volt a Panzer I sorozat utolsó tagja. Miután Németország úgy döntött, hogy megtámadja Lengyelországot, a Panzer I alapján egy nehéz, gyalogsági támogató harckocsi fejlesztésébe kezdtek 1939 szeptemberében. A 21 tonnás harckocsit eredetileg VK. 18.01-nek nevezték, de később a Panzer I F lett hivatalosítva.

A kerekeket átlapolták, torziós rudas felfüggesztést kapott. Emiatt lett nagyobb a tömege a tervezettnél.

A sofőrnek a tanktest tetejére is szereltek periszkópokat, a kukucskálón kívül.

Krupp, MAN ja Rheinmetall valmistivat prototyypit, joita testattiin vuonna 1935. Kruppin malli valittiin sarjavalmistukseen. Ensimmäinen Panzer IV A valmistui lokakuussa 1937, ja yhteensä 35 valmistettiin seuraavan kuuden kuukauden aikana.

Loppuvuodesta 1942 G-mallin vaunujen 75 millimetrin KwK 40 -tykin putkea pidennettiin viisi kaliiperin mittaa 48-kaliiperiseksi.

Panzer IV:n kehnompaa perusrakennetta kompensoivat muut ominaisuudet.

Suomi osti Saksasta jatkosodan aikana 15 kappaletta uusia Pz IV Ausf J -vaunuja hintaan 5 000 000 Suomen markkaa kappale. Suomalaisilta peritty hinta oli noin kaksinkertainen valmistuskustannuksiin nähden. Suomessa vaunut ehtivät sotatoimiin ainoastaan entisiä omistajiaan vastaan Lapin sodassa. Niitä käytettiin myöhemmin koulutukseen ja yksi esittää vuoden 1955 Tuntematon sotilas -elokuvassa KV-1-neuvostovaunua.

If you add a pre-order item in with other items, it will be back ordered and supplied when it arrives with out any additional P&H costs.

Some hobby manufacturers are small “cottage” industries with limited resources, others represent companies who manufacture in batches. (Batch manufacturing is where the supplier makes enough for current orders, then starts accumulating orders for the next economical production run which may take months or longer). Pre-orders may be delayed till a batch is manufactured but sometimes they are cancelled completely.

New Releases also fall into pre-orders. Most suppliers announce new items at the start of each calendar year and progressively produce them. By pre-ordering a new release you insure an allocation and quick delivery once it is released. If you wish to cancel a pre-order, this can be done at any time prior to shipment with a complete refund.

Occasionally new releases may be internationally oversubcribed and we may not be allocated enough product to supply our pre-orders. In this event the item will be allocated in order of subscription, and items not fulfilled will be refunded via Paypal. Prices for Pre-order "New releases" are our best estimate and subject to change when the item becomes available. Any Pre-payment for these items will be considered as a deposit and the difference requested or refund made when the goods become available. Again if the actual amount is not acceptable, you can cancel your pre-order for a full refund.
